Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian rio.
Etymology: < Italian rio (a1321), specific use of rio small river or waterway (c1282) < classical Latin rīvus stream, brook (see rive n.3). Compare Old French, Middle French, French †riu small stream (late 12th cent., also Middle French ru, Middle French, French †rieu, etc.), Old Occitan riu, both in sense ‘small stream’, and Catalan riu (13th cent.), Spanish río (12th cent.), Portuguese rio (10th cent. as riu), all in sense ‘river’.The plural form rii reflects the Italian plural form.
In Venice: any of the small narrow canals within the city boundaries.The rii comprise all Venetian canals except the Grand Canal, the Canareggio Canal, and those (such as the Guidecca Canal) which surround rather than traverse the city.
