单词 riviation
释义

riviationn.

Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin riveation-, riveatio.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin riveation-, riveatio fowling, hawking (1313 in a British source) < post-classical Latin rivere to fowl, to hawk (1234, 1333 in British sources; < Anglo-Norman riveer , river , Anglo-Norman and Old French riveier , Old French, Middle French rivoier to hunt waterfowl (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French) < rive rive n.1) + classical Latin -ātiō -ation suffix. In the source of the quot., the sense of the English word is given as ‘fishing or fowling’, but the author does not give evidence supporting this definition, and the Latin texts which he cites do not explain the sense of the term either. It is likely that Hale misapprehended the term.
English Law. Obsolete. rare.
The hunting of waterfowl.
