单词 rivo
释义

rivoint.

Forms: 1500s–1600s riuo, 1600s ryuo.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Although many etymological suggestions have been offered, all are speculative. One of the suggested etymologies is that the word represents a borrowing of Italian rivo rivulet, stream, brook (see rive n.3), with Riuo Castiliano in quot. a1593 taken to mean ‘Castilian stream, i.e. liquor’; compare also co-occurrence with Castile in quot. 1600. N.E.D. (1909) takes the word to be of Spanish origin, tentatively suggesting a derivation < Spanish arriba up, upwards (10th cent.; < an unattested post-classical Latin phrase *ad ripam < classical Latin ad (see ad- prefix) + rīpam , accusative of rīpa riverbank: see ripa n.2), with elision of the first syllable; however, there is no corroborating evidence to support this view. No corresponding use as interjection is attested in either Italian or Spanish. Finally, many 19th-cent. commentators have suggested that the word may have arisen as a misapprehension of, or misprint for, various other Romance or Latin words, e.g. Spanish río river (see rio n.2) or classical Latin bībō , 1st person singular present indicative of bībere to drink (see bever n.), but such suggestions also fail to convince.
Obsolete.
Used as a toast or salutation before drinking, or as an exclamation of encouragement or enthusiasm.
