Origin: A borrowing from Swedish. Etymon: Swedish ripa.

Etymology: < Swedish ripa (1619 as second element in the compound sniöripa (see below), c1635 used independently; 1577 as (now regional) rupa ), cognate with the Scandinavian nouns cited at rype n.Quot. 1819 shows an earlier occurrence in an English context of Swedish snöripa (1619 as †sniöripa ; < snö snow n.¹ + ripa), lit. ‘snow ripa’, denoting both the rock ptarmigan and the willow grouse.

Now rare.

In Scandinavia: the willow grouse, Lagopus lagopus, or the rock ptarmigan, L. mutus; = rype n.
