Etymology: < German Riss (in Riss-Vergletscherung; A. Penck in A. Penck & E. Brückner Die Alpen im Eiszeitalter (1901) I. i. 110) < Riss, the name of a tributary of the Isar in Austria and Germany.

Designating the penultimate glaciation in the Alps, preceding the Würm and following the Mindel, and possibly corresponding to the Saale glaciation of northern Europe; of or relating to this glaciation.
