Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin risus sardonius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin risus sardonius forced, bitter laughter (a1536 in Erasmus, or earlier), fixed, grin-like expression resulting from spasm of facial muscles (1532 as sardonius risus , or earlier) < classical Latin rīsus laughter (see risus sardonicus n.) + sardonius (see sardonian adj.). Compare Hellenistic Greek γέλωτα σαρδόνιον (accusative) forced, bitter laughter, attested as a Greek phrase in the classical Latin author Cicero. With sense 2 compare earlier risus sardonicus n.
