Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rittmeister.
Etymology: < German Rittmeister (16th cent.) < Ritt act of riding, ride, formerly also ‘unit of cavalry’ (see ride n.2) + Meister master n.1, perhaps after Middle Low German ritmēster , ritmeister or the similarly-formed Middle Dutch ritmeester , attested earliest in an area bordering Germany (Dutch ritmeester ). Compare earlier Rittmaster n.
Military. Now chiefly historical.
In German-speaking contexts: (a title for) a captain in a cavalry regiment; = Rittmaster n.
