Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: roan n.4, -y suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < roan n.4 (see roan n.4 2) + -y suffix1, apparently so called on account of its colour (compare quot. 1884).Attested earliest in British sources, but frequently referred to as a North American product.
Chiefly English regional (northern) and Scottish. Now historical.
Designating a type of thick tar formerly used for smearing sheep to protect the skin and fleece. Also occasionally as n.
