Etymology: In α. forms < rock n.1 + paper n. + and conj.1 + scissors n. In β. forms < rock n.1 + paper n. + scissors n. So called with reference to the gestures made during the game. Compare German Stein, Schere, Papier (1911 or earlier). Compare earlier rock scissors paper n., scissors paper stone n., and also earlier janken n., Roshambo n.While the game is associated with East Asia, the attested forms of its the name in local languages are not models of its English names (see discussion at Roshambo n.).

A game (used esp. to settle petty disputes or as a tiebreaker) in which, at an agreed signal, each participant makes a gesture with one hand representing either a rock, paper, or a pair of scissors, the winner being determined according to an established scheme. Cf. Roshambo n.The scheme which determines the winner assigns various attributes to the symbols as follows: rock blunts scissors (rock wins); scissors cut paper (scissors win); paper covers rock (paper wins).
