Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin rōdent-, rōdēns.
Etymology: < classical Latin rōdent-, rōdēns, present participle of rōdere to gnaw, eat away, erode, perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit rad- to dig, gnaw. With senses A. 2 and B. 1 compare scientific Latin Rodentia (see Rodentia n.). In sense B. 2 after the corresponding figurative use of rat n.1 (compare rat n.1 4a).
