Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rogue n., elephant n.
Etymology: < rogue n. + elephant n. Compare Sinhala hora aliyā (see quot. 1840 at sense 1) < hora thievish, restive ( < horā thief < Sanskrit cora) + aliyā elephant (not the usual word for the animal; < Tamil alliyaṉ stray elephant), although it is uncertain whether the English expression is after Sinhala or vice versa.
