Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit rohaṇa, rohaṇ, rohiṇa.
Etymology: < Sanskrit rohaṇa (also with vernacular pronunciation rohaṇ), apparently only attested in this form in sense ‘cedar’, vernacular variant of rohiṇa red, reddish, used to denote various trees (compare redwood n.1 2), ultimately < the same Indo-European base as red adj. Compare slightly later rohuna n.
Now historical and rare.
More fully rohun bark: the dried bark of the rohuna tree, used medicinally as a febrifuge and general tonic, esp. as a substitute for cinchona. Also (more fully rohun tree): the rohuna tree, which yields this bark.
