单词 | rodinia |
释义 | Rodinian. Geology. (The name of) a supercontinent, comprising most of the continental crust of the earth, which is thought to have existed in the late Proterozoic era (approx. 1100 to 750 million years ago). ΚΠ 1989 M. A. S. McMenamin & D. L. Schulte McMenamin Emergence of Animals vi. 95 This supercontinent deserves its own name, so here we propose the name Rodinia for the Precambrian supercontinent and Mirovia for the corresponding superocean. These names are taken from Russian. A derivation from Russian seems fitting, because of the important research done by Soviet earth scientists on the Late Precambrian and Early Cambrian... Rodinia comes from the [Russian] infinitive rodit′ which means ‘to beget’ or ‘to grow’. Rodinia begat all subsequent continents. 1998 N.Y. Times (Nexis) 1 Sept. f4 The glaciations were touched off, according to the hypothesis, when an ancient supercontinent called Rodinia broke into several continents. 2005 M. Bjornerud Reading Rocks iv. 137 In latest Proterozoic time, almost all of Earth's continental crust was jammed together in a vast landmass posthumously called Rodinia. This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, November 2010; most recently modified version published online March 2022). < |
