Etymology: Probably < an unattested regional (Indian) use of Portuguese robalo sea bass, in Brazilian Portuguese also snook (1340 as †rrobalo , used as surname' 1595 denoting the fish; metathesized variant of an unattested form *lobarro (compare Catalan llobarro sea bass (1599)), a derivative (with a suffix of unknown origin) of lobo wolf (see lobo n.; compare fish names such as loup n.⁴, sea-wolf n. 2), with folk-etymological alteration after roe n.² and ball n.¹ Compare Spanish robalo sea bass (a1418), and also (perhaps < English) French †roubal (1829 or earlier in a work on ichthyology, alongside the English name of the fish; both are reported as used by the French and British colonists of the Coromandel Coast and Punducherry in India).

Chiefly Anglo-Indian. Obsolete.
