Etymology: < rock n.1 + fish n.1 In sense 1(c) after German Klippfisch (1719 in the source translated in quot. 1731 at sense 1; now usually in sense ‘dried cod’), itself after South African Dutch clipvis , klipvis klipfish n. In sense 2a after Norwegian klepfisk klipfish n.; compare the Germanic parallels cited at klipfish n.
1. Any of various fishes frequenting rocky shores or seabeds; spec. (a) (frequently with distinguishing word) any of numerous fishes of the family Scorpaenidae, esp. of the Pacific coast of North America; cf. scorpion fish n. at scorpion n. Compounds 3; (b) chiefly U.S. any of various sea basses and groupers (family Serranidae); (c) South African = klipfish n. 1 (obsolete); (d) U.S. the striped bass, Morone saxatilis; (e) New Zealand any of several fishes of the genus Acanthoclinus (family Plesiopidae).
