Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin rotalis ; Latin rota , -al suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin rotalis wheeled (4th or 5th cent.), revolving (9th cent. in a British source), of or relating to the Rota (1581 or earlier; < classical Latin rota wheel (see rota n.) + -ālis -al suffix1), and partly < classical Latin rota wheel + -al suffix1. With sense 3 compare earlier rotary adj.
1. Relating to a wheel or wheels. Also figurative. Obsolete.
