Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a Portuguese lexical item. Etymons: rotative adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < rotative adj. + -ism suffix, probably after Portuguese rotativismo (1904 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier rotativist adj. and rotativist n.
Chiefly historical.
A system whereby different political parties rotate in office according to a pre-arranged plan rather than by electoral mandate, esp. in Portugal in the second half of the 19th cent.
