Etymology: < scientific Latin Rotatoria ( C. G. Ehrenberg Organisation, Systematik u. geogr. Verhältniss der Infusionsthierchen (1830) 64) < post-classical Latin rotatorius rotatory adj. + -a -a suffix2 (see -ia suffix2), after earlier use as specific name (in scientific Latin Vorticella rotatoria ( O. F. Mueller Verm. I. (1773) i. 106)). Compare earlier Rotifera n.
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A class or phylum of minute or microscopic aquatic animals comprising the rotifers and (formerly) certain ciliates; (also in form rotatoria) animals of this class or phylum (collectively or individually); rotifers, wheel-animalcules. Cf. Rotifera n.The status of Rotatoria and Rotifera as names for the phylum are unresolved and Rotatoria is still in wide use.In quot. 1826 Rotatoria is used as a specific name.
