Any compound having a molecular structure in which a chain of atoms is threaded through a ring and, though not chemically bonded to the ring, is mechanically constrained in position by the ring's structure. ΚΠ 1969 Chem. Abstr. 70 297/1 The name rotaxanes is suggested for newly synthesized aggregates consisting of a macrocycle and a chain with bulky end groups. 1998 Chem. in Brit.
