Etymology: < Roman adj.1 + fever n.1, after post-classical Latin febris Romana (1541 in the passage translated in quot. 1726, or earlier). Compare Italian †febre Romanesca (1726 in the passage translated in quot. 1726; the edition is an Italian–English bilingual one). With sense 2 compare Roman adj.1 8.
