Etymology: < Roman adj.1 + law n.1, after Spanish ley romana (a1425) and its model post-classical Latin lex Romana (6th cent.). Compare Middle French, French †romaine loy (1587), French loi romaine (1601 as loy romaine), Italian legge Romana (13th cent.).
The system or code of law developed by the ancient Romans, which forms the basis of many modern legal codes; (hence) any of various systems or codes of law historically derived from this.
