Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French rosat (French rosat ) compounded, flavoured, scented, or coloured with essence of roses (1256 in Old French in sirop rosat ; compare earlier eve rosade rose water (c1160)) and its etymon post-classical Latin rosatus of rose, prepared from roses (4th cent.), rose-coloured (8th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin rosa rose n.1 + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare Old Occitan rozat prepared from roses (c1220), Catalan rosat prepared from roses, rose-coloured (14th cent.), Spanish rosado rose-coloured (c1250), Italian rosato prepared from roses (c1225, rare), rose-coloured (14th cent.). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin rosatum rose wine (early 4th cent.), rose jam (late 4th cent.).
