Etymology: Partly (i) < Romani romaničal, romaničel Romani person (irrespective of gender), usually in plural or collective contexts, probably < romani , plural of romanō + -čal , -čel (only in compounds), of uncertain origin, perhaps originally a variant of čavō Romani man (see chav n.); and partly (ii) < Romani adj. + chal n. Compare French Romanichel (a1829 as Romamichel ). Compare earlier Rom n.2, Romani n. 1, and Romani adj. With sense A. 2 compare Romany chai n.The β. forms show alteration of the first element after the Romani masculine singular form romanō.
