Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Romano-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Romano- (in e.g. Romano-Germanicus (1677 in a work title, or earlier)), combining form of classical Latin Rōmānus Roman adj.1; compare -o- connective. Compare French romano- (formations in which are found from at least the late 18th cent., e.g. romano-grec : see Romano-Greek adj. and n.).Formations in English are found from the first half of the 18th cent., apparently earliest in Romano-Briton n.
Forming adjectives and nouns with the sense ‘Roman and ——’, or ‘partly Roman and partly ——’ (chiefly with reference to ancient Rome).
