Etymology: < Rothesay, the name of a town on the island of Bute, Scotland.The office of Rothesay herald was created in 1398 to serve the new dukedom of Rothesay. The title of Duke of Rothesay was given to the heir apparent of the throne of Scotland from 1398 to 1707, and since then has been a Scottish title of the heir apparent to the throne of the United Kingdom.
