Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rotifera.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rotifera (1819 or earlier; < post-classical Latin rotifera , neuter plural of rotiferus (1771 or earlier) < classical Latin rota wheel (see rota n.) + -ferus : see -iferous comb. form), after French Rotifères , order name ( Cuvier Règne animal (1817) IV. 89). Compare earlier rotifer n.Rotifera is usually a plural form, but in early use it is sometimes treated as singular, with the plural form rotiferae, apparently by association with Latin feminine singulars in -a.
Zoology.
With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement. A phylum of minute or microscopic aquatic animals characterized by an anterior ring of cilia (the corona) that is used in feeding and (in most kinds) swimming. Also, with plural agreement (also in form rotifera): animals of this phylum (collectively or individually); rotifers, wheel animalcules. Cf. Rotatoria n.The Rotifera are pseudocoelomates and they were formerly regarded as a class of the phylum Aschelminthes.
