β. 1600s rotmaister, 1600s rottmaster, 1600s 1900s– rotmaster.

Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Probably also partly formed within English; partly modelled on a Dutch lexical item, partly modelled on a Middle Low German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Swedish lexical item. Etymons: Dutch rotmeester ; Middle Low German rōtemēster ; rot n.2, master n.1
Etymology: Originally < either Dutch rotmeester (Middle Dutch rotmeester ; < rot rot n.2 + meester master n.1) or its similarly-formed equivalent Middle Low German rōtemēster, with remodelling of the second element after master n.1 In β. forms probably directly < rot n.2 + master n.1, after Dutch rotmeester, Middle Low German rotmēster, rotmeister, rōtemeister, and Swedish rotemästare (Old Swedish rotamästare ; itself < Middle Low German); compare German Rottmeister (mid 15th cent. as rothmeister , now historical). Compare later rot n.2 Compare also later Rittmaster n., with which it sometimes seems to be confused. With the α. forms compare earlier rout n.1
Military. Now historical (rare).
The commander of a small detachment of soldiers. Cf. rot n.2
