Etymology: < German Romanze romance n.Compare the following earlier occurrence of the German noun in different sense (denoting a literary genre; compare romance n. 3a) in an English context:1839 Monthly Mag. Jan. 58 The Germans have, perhaps, more purely lyrical poems than any nation; they have Romanzen in the like proportion. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (roma·ntsə) /roˈmantsə/. In plural form romanzen after the German plural form.
Music.
A composition of a tender or lyrical character; esp. a slow instrumental piece or movement. Cf. romance n. 2b, romanza n.
