单词 rombowline
释义

rombowlinen.

Brit. /rɒmˈbəʊlɪn/, U.S. /ˌrɑmˈboʊlən/
Forms:

α. 1500s rombelon, 1500s rumbelo.

β. 1800s rhumbowline, 1800s rumbolin', 1800s rumboline, 1800s rumbowlin', 1800s rumbowling, 1800s– rombowline, 1800s– rumbowline.

Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare Middle Low German rumplinc kind of animal skins. The α. forms are perhaps influenced by rumbelow n., which is frequently attested in sailors' songs, although it is difficult to make a case for such influence on semantic grounds. The β. forms may be influenced by association with bowline n.1 (compare bowline n.1 1, and forms at that entry).
Nautical. Now chiefly in historical contexts.
Rope or canvas which has become rotten; weak rope made from this (cf. twice-laid adj. a). Also in extended use: anything worthless or inferior; rubbish, trash (formerly occasionally spec. weak grog).
