Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Romer.
Etymology: < the name of Carrol Romer (1883–1951), British lawyer, who invented the device while serving with the Royal Engineers during the First World War (1914–18).
A small rectangular piece of cardboard or (now usually) plastic bearing perpendicularly aligned scales or (if transparent) a grid, used to determine the precise reference of a point within the grid printed on a map; a similar grid or set of scales marked on anything and intended to be used in this way.
