单词 romish catholic
释义

Romish Catholicadj.n.

Brit. /ˌrəʊmɪʃ ˈkaθ(ə)lɪk/, /ˌrəʊmɪʃ ˈkaθl̩ɪk/, U.S. /ˈˌroʊmɪʃ ˈkæθ(ə)lɪk/
Forms: see Romish adj. and n. and catholic adj. and n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Romish adj., catholic adj., catholic n.
Etymology: As adjective < Romish adj. + catholic adj. As noun < Romish adj. + catholic n. Compare slightly later Roman Catholic n. and adj., and see discussion at that entry.Compare Dutch roomsch-katholiek (1702 as adjective, 1724 as noun, both originally in form †Roomsch Catholique ; now rooms-katholiek ), German römisch-katholisch , adjective (1596 or earlier as †römisch catholisch ), Römisch-Katholischer , noun (1673 or earlier as †Römisch-Catholische , plural), which do not have a derogatory connotation. The Dutch passage translated in quot. 1579 at sense A. shows a non-lexicalized instance of Dutch de heilige roomse katholieke kerk ‘the holy Roman Catholic Church’, in which roomse modifies kerk rather than forming a compound with katholiek . In German, the more usual word for ‘member of the Roman Catholic Church’ is the simplex Katholik catholic n.
Chiefly derogatory. Now rare.
