Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Romulea.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Romulea ( G. F. Maratti Plantarum Romuleæ et Saturniæ in agro Romano (1772) 13), use as noun of the feminine of classical Latin Rōmuleus (see Romulean adj.); compare scientific Latin -a -a suffix¹. Compare French romulée (1819 or earlier), Italian romulea (1832 or earlier).

A small flowering plant of the genus Romulea (family Iridaceae), native to coastal regions of southern Europe and South Africa, which grows from a corm and has yellow, red, or purple flowers resembling a crocus. Also (in form Romulea): the genus itself.
