Etymology: < Spanish roncador any of several American fishes (1554), extended use of roncador person who snores (1495) < roncar to snore (c1250; < post-classical Latin ronchare to snore (5th cent.; < classical Latin ronchus , variant of rhonchus rhonchus n.)) + -ador -ator suffix.In plural form roncadores after the Spanish plural form.
U.S. Now rare.
Any of several sciaenid fishes (croakers) of the Pacific coast of North America, esp. the spotfin croaker, Roncador stearnsii, the black croaker, Cheilotrema saturnum, the yellowfin croaker, Umbrina roncador, and the white croaker, Genyonemus lineatus. Usually with distinguishing word.
