Etymology: < scientific Latin Rondeletia ( C. Plumier Nova plantarum Americanarum genera (1703) 15: see quot. 1739) < the name of Guillaume Rondelet , French naturalist (1507–66) + -ia -ia suffix1.
1. An evergreen shrub or small tree of the tropical American genus Rondeletia (family Rubiaceae); esp. any of the various kinds cultivated for their clusters of scented tubular flowers, typically red or pink in colour. Also (in form Rondeletia): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 172.

1739 P. Miller Gardeners Dict. (new ed.) II. sig. Hhh/2 Tree-like Rondeletia, with the Face of Laurus Tinus. This Plant was discovered by Father Plumier in America, who gave it this Name in Honour to Gulielmus Rondeletius, a famous Physician of Montpelier.
