Origin: A borrowing from Rapa Nui. Etymons: Rapa Nui rongorongo, kohau motu mo rongorongo, kohau rongorongo.
Etymology: < Rapa Nui rongorongo to recite, chant out (in kohau motu mo rongorongo, literally ‘lines incised for chanting out’, and its shortened form kohau rongorongo, literally ‘lines for chanting out’ (1871 or earlier; compare quot. 1891)), reduplicated < rongo message. Compare also Rapa Nui tangata rongorongo (compare quot. 1917).
A hieroglyphic script found on wooden tablets on Easter Island, a Chilean dependency in the eastern Pacific Ocean; the art of incising this. Occasionally: a person skilled in writing or reading the script. Frequently attributive.The script is no longer understood, and has not been deciphered. It survives on a small number of tablets (mostly wooden), of which the earliest date from the late 18th cent. The symbols used are principally zoomorphic and geometric.
