Etymology: Origin unknown. N.E.D. (1909) derives the word from Spanish ronquillo slightly hoarse (1615; rare) < ronco hoarse (1250; < classical Latin raucus raucous adj., with alteration after Spanish roncar to snore: see roncador n.) + -illo , diminutive suffix (compare -illa suffix). This etymology appears to be based only on the coincidental resemblance of the Spanish adjective to the name of the fish. However, perhaps compare Spanish ronco pelón (late 20th cent. or earlier), denoting any of several fishes belonging to the family Bathymasteridae.
