Compare post-classical Latin rosella, rosellus (from 1198 in British sources).With Anglo-Norman and Old French ros compare post-classical Latin ros, rosa, earlier raus, rausus (from the 9th and 8th centuries respectively in glossarial sources). Earlier currency of the word is perhaps implied by the surname Willielmus Rosel (1200), although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
