Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. roseorhodium Brit. /ˌrəʊzɪə(ʊ)ˈrəʊdɪəm/, U.S. /ˌroʊzioʊˈroʊdiəm/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin roseus.
Etymology: < classical Latin roseus (see roseous adj.); compare -o- connective.Found in a small number of formations from the mid 19th cent. (see below).
Chemistry. Now rare.
Forming the names of certain rose-red coordination compounds of metals with ammonia, esp. cobaltammines containing the cation [Co(NH3)5OH]2+; as roseochrome, roseochromium, roseocobalt, roseocobaltic, roseorhodium, etc. Cf. purpureo- comb. form.
