Etymology: < Arabic riṭl, raṭl, ruṭl (see below) < Hellenistic Greek λίτρα litre n.¹, with metathesis. Compare Middle French rotl (1411 in an apparently isolated attestation in a source from Cyprus), French †rottle (1727 or earlier), †rotol (1755 or earlier; now rotul (1964 or earlier)). Compare rotolo n.The β. forms reflect literary Arabic riṭl, the γ. forms its variant raṭl, while the α. forms reflect a further variant ruṭl (already attested in medieval texts, but now chiefly colloquial, and frequent in many Arabic dialects), which (via Italian rotolo ) is also the source of rotolo n.
