Compare Dutch rottig (1645 with reference to people with skin diseases, 1767 with reference to wood and subsequently other organic materials), early modern German rotig (figurative) corrupt, sinful (1528). Compare earlier rotten adj. and rotted adj. Compare also earlier roxy adj.
