Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rouge de fer.

Etymology: < French rouge de fer the colour of iron oxide (beginning of the 19th cent. or earlier), enamel colour used in China (1856 or earlier: see note) < rouge rouge n.¹ + de de prep. + fer iron (see ferraunt adj.).In 1856, the French expression is used to translate Chinese hóng red. Compare Chinese fán hóng yóu, literally ‘vitriol red glaze’ (1815 or earlier; translated in 1856 as French émail rouge d'alun), tiě hóng yóu, literally ‘iron red glaze’ (20th cent. or earlier).
