Etymology: < French rouge flambé, rouge flammé kind of Chinese red glaze (1857 or earlier) < rouge rouge n.1 + flambé fiery, having flames (see flambé adj.). Compare rouge au grand feu (1856 or earlier). Compare flambé adj. Compare earlier rouge de fer n.Compare Chinese huǒ hóng, lit. ‘fire red’, also used of porcelain glazes (20th cent. or earlier).

1. Usually with capital initials. Porcelain covered in a bright red glaze (see sense 2).
