Etymology: In α. forms < the name of Charles Marie Benjamin Rouget (1824–1904), French physiologist, who described such cells in 1873 ( Arch. de physiol. 5 603) + cell n.1, after German Rougetsche Zelle (B. J. Vimtrup 1922, in Zeitschr. f. Anat. u. Entwicklungsgeschichte 65 178). In β. forms < the genitive of the name of C. M. B. Rouget + cell n.1
