Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Partly also a borrowing from Latin. Partly also a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish rūmi; Persian rūmī; Arabic rūmī; Latin Rumi; Italian Rumi.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish rūmi (Turkish rumi ), Persian rūmī inhabitant of the Ottoman Empire, and their etymon Arabic rūmī (noun) inhabitant of the Byzantine Empire or (in later use) of Greece, member of the Greek Orthodox Church, also (in extended use) foreigner in general, use as noun of rūmī (adjective) Byzantine, Greek, Greek Orthodox < rūm (collective noun) the inhabitants of the Byzantine Empire collectively ( < Byzantine Greek Ῥώμη Constantinople: see Rome n.) + -i suffix2. In early use via post-classical Latin Rumi (1511 in the passage translated in quot. a1576) and Italian Rumi (1517 or earlier in the Italian text corresponding to the Latin of 1511; compare also quot. 1630).
In Arabic-speaking countries: a non-Muslim European male; (formerly) spec. one from the European territories of the Ottoman Empire. Cf. Roumia n.
