Etymology: < the name of a healing pool mentioned at John 5. 2–4, perhaps representing Bethzatha, and understood to mean ‘house of grace’.
Occasionally (chiefly in the nineteenth cent.) adopted by Methodists, Baptists, Independents, etc., as the name of a particular chapel or meeting-house. Hence also as a synonym for ‘Nonconformist chapel’.
