Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian rosolio, rosoglio.
Etymology: < Italian rosolio (1721 or earlier), †rosoglio (1753 or earlier), probably an alteration of †rosoli (see ros solis n.) by association with rosa rose n.1 and olio , (now regional) oglio oil n.1 Compare post-classical Latin rosolium , rossolium (13th or 14th cent.), and also Dutch rosoglio (19th cent.; 1797 or earlier as †rosolio ), German Rosolio (1754 or earlier; also as †Rosoglio (1784 or earlier)), both < Italian. Compare earlier ros solis n. (see sense 2 at that entry), rosa solis n.
A sweet cordial made in Southern Europe (esp. in Italy) from alcohol, raisins, sugar, rose petals, cloves, cinnamon, and other ingredients. Cf. rosa solis n. 1.
