Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: root n.1, -let suffix.
Etymology: < root n.1 + -let suffix. Compare earlier rootling n., and also radicle n., radicule n., radicula n. and foreign-language forms cited at those entries. In sense 3 probably after French radicule (see radicle n.).

a. A slender subsidiary root; a branch of the primary root of a plant. Also: any of the small lateral roots produced for support by ivy and certain other climbing plants. In early use also: †= radicle n. 1a (obsolete). Also figurative and in figurative contexts.
