Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Compare earlier romy v., and see discussion at that entry. It is unclear whether there is any connection with Scots (north-east) rumish, reemish, etc. ‘to knock (an object) over with a crash’ (late 18th cent.), ‘to move about with a crashing or clattering sound’ (early 20th cent.) (see Sc. National Dict. at Reemage v.), which probably at least shows association with rummage v.
Scottish. Obsolete.
