Origin: A borrowing from Swedish. Etymon: Swedish runstav.
Etymology: < Swedish runstav (17th cent. denoting both a staff inscribed with runes and a runic calendar; < runa , run rune n.2 + stav staff n.1), with remodelling of the second element after staff n.1 and (later) of the first element after rune n.2 Compare also Danish runstav (18th cent.). Compare also rune-stave n.
