Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin rūfēscent-, rūfēscēns, rūfēscere.
Etymology: < classical Latin rūfēscent-, rūfēscēns, present participle of rūfēscere to become reddish or tawny (Pliny) < rūfus reddish (see rufous adj.) + -ēscere (see -escent suffix).In post-classical Latin, rufescens occurs in zoological and botanical descriptions from 1696 or earlier, which use probably gave rise to scientific Latin rufescens (1762 as a specific name in zoology).
Chiefly Zoology.
Of a colour tending to reddish; somewhat rufous. Also as n. (rare).
